Suicide Bomber at Pakistani Mosque kills 11 (07-07-2008)

A suicide bomber in the capital of Pakistan killed at least 11 people. The bomber had targeted a mosque in Islamabad. Apparently the suicide bomber triggered off an explosion near a group of police offers, on duty to guard the Red Mosque area. There had been a fidgety crowd gathered here to commemorate fatal clashes between security forces of the government and Islamic militant groups. The explosion wounded more than 22 people and the majority of the dead and wounded seemed to be police officers.

There had been around 30 officers near the sidewalk of a police station which was a few yards from the mosque, located in the center of the city, when the explosion struck. Thousands had gathered at the mosque to commemorate a siege that had lasted more than a week and resulted in commandos sprawling the complex on the 10th of July. The battle had continued with militants armed with weapons and rocket launchers and more than 100 people had died.

There were medics rushing the wounded to the hospitals within minutes of the disaster. Thousands were fleeing the mosque as blood splattered on the floor. There were trails of blood, shoes and belongings on the sidewalk as the medics were running to pick up body parts from pavements. Zafar Yab Ahmad, who lived nearby and was at the mosque at the time of the explosion, said that he had just walked inside with his niece when the explosion occurred and came out to see around 10 bodies lying around and some were in uniform.

Despite the elaborate security measures at the Red Mosque including steel barricades to block streets and officers carrying semiautomatic weapons the suicide bomber managed to strike. The government had feared a terrorist attack on the anniversary of the siege, with a couple of hotels with foreign diplomats being speculated as the primary targets. There has been no certainty of the bombing being associated with the commemoration but it is most likely to be.

Less than a block from the site of the devastation, the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital was filled with cries and howls of relatives of the dead. There were attempts to perform CPR on wounded victims who appeared to be dead. The number of deaths had been increasing through the night and the toll might rise with the conditions of some victim’s deteriorating further.
